Welcome to the GeoWednesday talk "Can dynamic multiphase flow drive chaotic mixing in porous media?" by Gaute Linga, Associate Professor at PoreLab, Department of Physics, NTNU and affiliated researcher at the Njord Centre, University of Oslo.
When you add milk to a cup of coffee, a few turns of a spoon efficiently mix the components. In porous media such as soils and rocks, the flow is far too slow to be turbulent, yet the tortuous fluid pathways take on the role of the spoon, homogenizing concentrations much faster than diffusion alone. Since mixing is what brings reactants together, it controls many biogeochemical processes in the subsurface. When a single fluid carries the dissolved chemicals, this mixing process is fairly well understood. However, many porous systems are unsaturated: two fluids, such as water and air, occupy the pore space, and the interfaces between them rearrange as they flow. How such dynamic multiphase flows affect mixing has remained largely unexplored. In this talk, I present recent experiments and computer simulations revealing that such flows can stretch solute parcels exponentially over time – the hallmark of chaotic mixing – suggesting that mixing and chemical reactions in unsaturated media may proceed faster than previously thought.
Gaute Linga is a physicist working in the interdisciplinary field of flow in porous media. He is an Associate Professor at PoreLab, Department of Physics, NTNU and a guest researcher at the Njord Centre, UiO.

About GeoWednesday
Once a month, researchers at the Department of Geosciences, University of Oslo, will tell about their research and introduce the geociences to a wide audience, from first-year undergraduates, colleagues to interested in general. It is possible to ask questions after the lectures.
Coffee/tea are served. Everyone is welcome!
The lectures are streamed. You can watch the stream at Realfagsbiblioteket YouTube-channel.
