Music Careers in Teaching Event

PANEL DISCUSSION + RESOURCE FAIR + NETWORKING

CalArts' Herb Alpert School of Music and Patty Disney Center for Life and Work ("CLW" / Career Services) invite CalArts students, alumni, applicants, and guests to build knowledge and community around music education career outcomes.

This program introduces emerging musicians to the breadth of career opportunities available in music education. Through conversations with CalArts alumni educators, a live teaching demonstration, and direct access to prospective employers and career communities, participants will gain a clearer understanding of how musicians can build sustainable careers that combine teaching with performing, creative practice, entrepreneurship, community engagement, and other professional activities.

We are excited to create a space for attendees to explore and learn about:

• Multiple career pathways in music education beyond traditional classroom teaching
• How professional musicians translate their artistic practice into effective teaching
• What schools, community organizations, private studios, arts nonprofits, and other employers look for when hiring music educators
• Candid career advice from alumni and working educators
• A practical teaching demonstration experience with reflection on effective pedagogy
• Prospective employers and organizations serving music educators
• Immediate next steps for internships, teaching opportunities, substitute work, fellowships, residencies, and full- or part-time employment
• How to build a professional network of peers, alumni, educators, and potential employers
