Abstract
The CA Section is celebrating its 125th anniversary in the same year that ACS National celebrates its 150th anniversary. The Summer Experiences for the Economically Disadvantaged (SEED) Program is a national ACS program due in large part to Dr. Alan Nixon, a prominent ACS leader at both the local and national levels. In 1968, he managed to get a unanimous vote in Council when he brought his SEED petition up for a vote. This was the first of many educational endeavors supported by ACS.
In this symposium, attendees will learn how "Nick" managed to establish SEED in only 48 hours without the internet to help him. He wanted to offer this paid work opportunity to as many students as possible. Volunteer mentors would host students in their labs for the whole summer. Do you ever wonder what happened to these students after SEED? In this symposium attendees will hear from SEED alumni from 15, 20, and 30 years ago.
Nick asked Dr. Elaine Yamaguchi to grow the CA Section program, and hearing from these former SEED students will help attendees understand why SEED has been one of our Section's signature programs for so long.

Since the site is a federal lab, a government-issued ID is required for adults to gain entrance. Students may use their school ID badges if they do not have government-issued IDs.
