Join Cardiff Animation Festival and Abertoir Horror Festival for an engaging and interactive look at the history of using animation in horror, with a screening of classic animated shorts.

Animation has been the playground of mad gods and monsters from the very earliest days of cinema to the present, providing pioneering filmmakers, puppeteers, technicians and artists the means of creating fantastical worlds that inspire both wonder and horror.
In this illustrated lecture, Professor Stacey Abbott will examine animation as special effect, considering how it has helped shape the horror genre by looking at the work of groundbreaking artists, including Wladyslaw Starewicz and Segundo de Chomón to Ray Harryhausen, Phil Tippett and Randall William Cook. Their work, among others, highlights the inherent synergies that bind horror and animation together, to visualise the spectacle of the supernatural alongside the materiality of the monstrous, yielding a history of magical and monstrous creations.

The lecture will stitch together pioneering examples of early animation and classic examples of horror special effects, from the spectral effects of the early 20th Century to the monster-craze of the 1950s and 60s and through to body horror of the 1980s, demonstrating how animation provided a visual language for the monstrous and a means of rendering the seemingly impossible possible.
