About this Event
What does it mean to organize through a Black Queer Feminist lens?
Join BYP100 Detroit for a powerful community political education session on Black Queer Feminist (BQF) Organizing 101. This is a foundational space for anyone who wants to understand how we build power, analyze oppression, and envision a world where all Black people are free.
We'll explore the Combahee River Collective Statement — the radical Black feminist lineage that shapes BYP100's politics — and ask: Who are my people? Through the lens of intersectionality, we'll examine how different identity groups experience oppression at the intersections of race, class, gender, sexuality, ability, and citizenship status.
This session is grounded in the belief that the freedom of Black women and queer people secures the freedom of all people.
Why This Matters
BYP100 uses a Black Queer Feminist lens to envision our future and analyze the complex ways that systems of economic, electoral, social, and educational power oppress our people. We believe that to organize for the liberation of our people, we must both alter relations of power by confronting oppressive systems and institutions at their root and work to improve lives in ways that are immediate and widely felt.
This session is a foundation for everything we do — whether you're brand new to organizing or looking to deepen your practice.
Who Should Attend
- New and existing BYP100 members
- Detroit organizers, activists, and community builders
- Anyone interested in Black feminist thought, intersectionality, or abolitionist organizing
- Supporters of BYP100's mission and those curious about joining the work
This is a 101 space — no prior knowledge required. Come as you are, with your questions and your experiences.
