About this Event

Bye Bye Backshirt tells the history of the two years of anti-fascist struggle that successfully broke the rise of Oswald Mosley and his antisemitic British Union of Fascists.

Opposition to Mosley took place across the country; from Newcastle to Plymouth, Hull to Liverpool, Scotland to Wales.

On 29 September 1934 anti fascist assembled on Cheetham Hill Rd, they marched - illegally - to Belle Vue compex in Hyde. Rallied and then shouted down Oswald Mosley and silenced Britians worul be fasist leader.

The movement that halted the rise of fascism in Britain was made up of members of the Communist Party, the Independent Labour Party, the Labour party, trade unionists, church and community groups, and social and cultural organisations.

In Manchester the resistance was organised by young communists who met every week; to hold dances, talk, plan and mobilise to stop the Blackshirt thugs marching and terrorising the local Jewish community.

The authir will speak about his book, a comprehensive account of the rise of fascism and how in Britain it was defeated by mass movements from below, led by young, radical communists in the 1930s.
