Few bassists in jazz history can claim a résumé like Buster Williams. Over a career spanning more than six decades, he has played and recorded with an astonishing roster of jazz giants, including Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, Sarah Vaughan, McCoy Tyner, Sonny Rollins, Count Basie, and Betty Carter, to name only a few. His deep, resilient sound made him a first-call bassist across generations, from his early work with Jimmy Heath and Gene Ammons in the late 1950s to his years anchoring the celebrated Herbie Hancock Sextet and the Herbie Hancock Trio with Al Foster.
Williams' artistry extends well beyond the bandstand — he's recorded soundtracks for films including Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me and Spike Lee's Clockers, and has appeared on television from The Tonight Show to Sesame Street. His accolades include a 1979 Grammy Award, a National Endowment for the Arts grant, and a 5-star DownBeat rating for his album Crystal Reflections.
A founding member of the celebrated cooperative quartet Sphere and leader of his own acclaimed group "Something More," Williams has spent a lifetime carrying forward the lineage of jazz's greatest tradition. This performance is a rare chance to witness a true architect of the music's history, live and in person.
