This walk takes us into the streets behind Burlington House and The Royal Academy of Arts to investigate and admire many well-designed buildings constructed for high end Jazz Age retailers, today home to many designer brands such as Balenciaga, YSL and Ralph Lauren.
The interwar era of the 1920s and 30s was a time of forward-thinking, colourful and geometrical design in fashion and furnishings. This was echoed in architecture, especially in the fashionable shopping streets of the West End and Old Bond Street where the Bright Young Things and society ladies shopped for party frocks, perfume and diamond jewellery as well as antiques for their home and handmade luggage for their weekends away in the country and trips abroad.
This route offers a diverse ranges of architectural styles from that period, inclcluding some buildings with a more utilitaran connection that are just as impressive as the shop fronts, plus a few post-war constructions that are clearly inspired by the innovative Art Deco era.
This walk is all about looking up – I hope you will see that the best things aren't always to be seen in the shop windows!
- 2hrs max / 1 mile
- Ends near Oxford Circus station

My guiding style is inclusive, open and friendly. I design and research every tour myself – in fact, the research never ends. The walks and talks I offer are all on subjects that intrigue me and each one highlights a different facet of my personality. I am particularly interested in the architecture of our ever-changing streets and the little details on and above them. For more information, please visit www.janeslondonwalks.com
