Join Tucson-based artist and natural dyer, Elana Bloom for a natural dye workshop utilizing the technique of bundle dyeing to make a beautiful silk scarf using a medley of plants and natural dyes.
Bundle dyeing is the art of wrapping plants in fiber to create mottled and beautiful floral prints. The resulting colors and patterns will depend on the dyes and plants chosen and the creative ideas of each participant. Participants will also have the opportunity to work with cochineal dye to add pink or purple layers to their silk.
- Introduction to natural dye plants, including foraging dye plants local to Southern and Central Arizona
- Introduction to mordanting fibers of all types.
- How to safely steam and extract color from plants on a stovetop
- How to change the pH of natural dye materials to create a range of colors.
- Participants will make a silk scarf of their own to take home, along with prepared instructions for how to do simple dye projects on their own.
Participants will also learn the fundamentals of how to care for our naturally dyed silk and iron them smooth without wrinkles for immediate wear.
ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR
Elana Bloom is an artist and natural dyer who runs a small Tucson-based natural dye studio and fine art practice. A forager, she enjoys ethically gathering natural resources to make her own dyes and art supplies and regularly dyes collections of vibrant silk scarves. Bloom began her natural dye practice in 2019 and has enjoyed teaching the art and science of dyeing to both public and private audiences for six years.
Tickets are $80 per person. Includes materials and instructions.
