About this Event

Presented by Michael P. Milham, MD, PhD

Michael P. Milham, MD, PhD, an internationally recognized neuroscience researcher, is the Chief Science Officer and the founding director of the Center for Integrative Developmental Neuroscience (IDN) at the Child Mind Institute. He is also a practicing child and adolescent psychiatrist.

About the Event

Youth mental health care is still largely organized around episodic assessments and diagnostic categories, despite the fact that symptoms, functioning, risk, and response to intervention change continuously over time and across contexts. This lecture will examine the development of a precision learning system for youth mental health that integrates clinical measurement, neuroscience, digital phenotyping, and longitudinal real-world signals to better characterize changing mental states and determine what works, for whom, when, and under what conditions.

Using examples from open-science datasets, digital interventions, ecological assessment, and responsible AI, the lecture will explore how these tools can augment clinical formulation, identify changes that may be missed between encounters, and create more adaptive pathways to prevention, intervention, and care. The broader challenge is not simply to build better apps or predictive models, but to develop an infrastructure in which research, clinical practice, and real-world experience continuously inform one another while preserving appropriate boundaries for human clinical judgment.

Learning Objectives
  • Describe the core elements of a learning health system for youth mental health.
  • Explain how longitudinal measurement, digital tools, and responsible AI can extend traditional models of mental health care.
  • Distinguish between developing standalone digital mental health applications and building shared learning infrastructure.
