Join us for a FREE in-person participatory training on building co-operative business!
Build a Co-op is a three-part training series on different facets of cooperatives. You'll come away with an understanding of cooperative principles, different co-op structures, considerations when starting a co-op, and resources for guiding your next steps.
Dates and Sessions
Friday | September 18 | 10am-12pm
- Build a Co-Op: An overview on cooperative principles and examples before diving into a co-op creation exercise.
Friday | October 9 | 10am-12pm
- Resolving Conflicts, Cooperatively: Strategies and practices for exploring healthy conflict when everyone has a voice.
Friday | December 4 | 10am-12pm
- Collective Purchasing, a Start: One of the most powerful tools for lowering costs is collective purchasing. We will create a roadmap for coming together collectively, even when not in a formal cooperative.
Location:
All trainings will take place in the City Action Hall at the National Building Museum.
The National Building Museum is located at: 401 F Street NW, Washington, DC 20001.
You can go straight to the City Action Hall, there will be signs to the room, or ask at the Visitor Center for directions.
Times:
The trainings are scheduled from 10am-12pm.
Please note, the museum does not open until 10am.
If you arrive earlier than 10am, you will need to wait until doors open to enter.
Transit:
The closest Metro station is Judiciary Square (Red Line). Gallery Place - Chinatown is two blocks away (Yellow/Green/Red Lines).

Trainers:
Your trainers are Kate Mereand and Virginia-Marie Roure, co-founders of Obra Terra, a consultancy in formation. Both have seen how the economy works and want to change how we do business. We started Obra Terra after years of working in government and seeing what doesn't work and how small businesses are struggling to compete in a consolidated marketplace.
