Join Conservation Nebraska for a fascinating presentation and hike with Steven Rolfsmeier, director of the High Plains Herbarium, on bryophytes (mosses, liverworts and hornworts) of Nebraska.He will discuss their place in the plant kingdom, their ecology and role in the environment, and the need to document their species distributions throughout the state. After the talk, meet us at Wilderness Park to see some of Nebraska's moss species in person. Warm clothes and sturdy shoes are recommended!
Location: Seminar will be at Walt Library, 6701 S 14th St, and nature walk will follow immediately at Jamaica North Trailhead South, Saltillo Rd, Roca, NE.
Speaker Bio:
Steven Rolfsmeier grew up near Seward, Nebraska. As an undergrad at Doane College, he worked extensively with the college's historical herbarium, and eventually got a job working weekends in the University herbarium in Lincoln. Following the completion of his master's degree at UNL, he worked as a consulting botanist, and got an opportunity to spend a summer surveying plants on the Pine Ridge in northwest Nebraska in 1991. While there, he spent much of his free time volunteering for Ron Weedon in the Chadron State College herbarium, and was hired as full-time director of the High Plains Herbarium in 2011. Since then, they have added over 10,000 specimens to the collection, and completed digitalization of their plant specimen records (including mosses and lichens), which can be accessed online through the Symbiota Great Plains Herbarium portal.
