The public is invited to attend the free art exhibition “Bridging Worlds: Spirits, Ancestors, and African Art” on view from November 10, 2026 to February 10, 2027 in the Hope Gallery, on the Florida A & M University (FAMU) campus in the School of Journalism and Graphic Communications building (SJGC). The Opening Reception will take place on Thursday, November 12 from 5:00pm to 7:00pm. The event is free and open to the public.
The exhibition showcases 15 works of African art from the Fine Arts Collection in the Visual Arts Program, along with student artwork from six classes inspired by these works. The classes represent both the Visual Arts Program and Graphic Design and include African Art History, Fundamentals of Design I, Drawing I, Graphic Design II, User Experience Design, and Graphic Design Practicum I. Curated by Courtnay Micots, Ph.D., FAMU Associate Professor of Art History, the exhibition features research labels written by her students. A QR code provides access to digitally-created educational programs and games designed by students in Graphic Design’s UX classes.
“Bridging Worlds” may be understood as a metaphor. The primary focus of the exhibition is the spiritual aspects and divisions of the African art on display: “Calling the Spirits,” “Asking for Protection,” “Honoring Spirits & Deities,” and “Crossing into Spirit Worlds.” Another meaning of “Bridging Worlds” is the future merging of the Visual Arts Program and Graphic Design program and the creation of the new Graphic Design & Digital Arts degree, replacing the former Fine Arts and Graphic Design degree.
The history of the Visual Arts Program can be found on FAMU’s website at https://tinyurl.com/t8mnm3tx. From the beginning, nearly 100 years ago, the Fine Arts and Graphic Design classes were part of one program. Prominent African-American artists and educators like Augusta Savage and Samella Lewis have participated. Come see the art from FAMU’s young artists today.
The Hope Gallery is open from 8:00am to 5:00pm Monday to Friday. Free parking for the public is available during these hours via a Visitor’s Pass, obtainable through the Office of Parking and Transportation at 2400 Althea Gibson Way. For the Opening Reception, parking is free anywhere on campus except for reserved spaces. Follow signs on the SJGC to find the Hope Gallery on the third floor (accessible by stairs or elevator).
