Brazilian Zouk is a dance built on connection, trust, and communication. Because we often dance in close embrace, understanding how to communicate boundaries and recognize consent through body language is essential. An invitation to a closer connection is just that—an invitation, not an expectation. Both leaders and followers can express their comfort levels through subtle cues, and learning to recognize and respect those cues helps create safer, more comfortable, and ultimately more connected dances. Consent is also ongoing and can change at any moment—even within a single song. A dancer who welcomes close connection at one moment may prefer more space the next, and vice versa. Being attentive and responsive to these changes allows both partners to feel respected and free to express themselves throughout the dance.
Whether you're new to Zouk or have been dancing for years, these are skills we can all continue to develop. Katie Harris, a veteran dancer and teacher in our community, will lead the first hour of this workshop, exploring safety, boundaries, and consent on the dance floor—important topics that don't always get the attention they deserve in our regular classes.
For the second hour, we'll switch gears and have some fun learning a Brazilian Zouk pattern taught by two familiar faces from our local dance community! We'll finish with a 30-minute practica to explore what we've learned, connect with one another, and enjoy some dancing.
This special workshop takes place during the week between Gabriel deCarvalho's regular four-week class sessions, at the same time and location. Come for the learning, stay for the dancing, and help us build a community where everyone feels comfortable, respected, and free to express themselves through Zouk!
