About this Event
The classical guitar has a history that stretches back centuries, but its repertoire is hardly confined to the distant past. In Both Sides of the Classical Guitar, guitarist, arranger, and LAAPA Faculty member, Brian King brings together music from different eras and traditions, revealing just how much a single instrument can say.
The program moves from the intricate compositions of Baroque masters Johann Sebastian Bach, Giovanni Girolamo Kapsberger, and Alessandro Piccinini to more familiar melodies, including Joe Hisaishi's "One Summer's Day" from Spirited Away, Frank Churchill's "Someday My Prince Will Come," and Joni Mitchell's "Both Sides Now." Louisiana's own "You Are My Sunshine" also finds its place in the program, alongside two original works by King.
Joining King is featured guest artist KC Tuazon (senior faculty at LAAPA) for three selections drawn from the musical traditions of Brazil and Argentina. Together, they will perform Marcos Valle's bossa nova favorite "Samba de Verão" ("So Nice") and two movements from Astor Piazzolla's Histoire du Tango: "Café, 1930" and "Nightclub, 1960." The selections range from the relaxed rhythms of Brazilian bossa nova to the rich harmonies and shifting character of Piazzolla's tango.
Another feature of the recital is the theorbo, a long-necked member of the lute family whose deep, resonant bass strings give it a sound quite different from the modern guitar. King will perform three Baroque works on the instrument, offering audiences a rare opportunity to hear music of the period played on an instrument closely associated with its time.
Part classical recital, part exploration of the guitar's remarkable range, Both Sides of the Classical Guitar brings together music that may be centuries apart in origin but shares an enduring capacity to move us.
