About this Event

Annie Foy - Botanical Printing on Fabrics

Capture realistic imprints of botanicals on linen, cotton and silk - with or without background colour. Using leaves from your garden you will print several 45cm wide panels, learn the basics and then be able to make larger prints at home.

ANNIE FOY
Extracting colour from natural sources has been a long standing interest for Annie. This has led her to combine travel with learning from leaders in the field of natural dyeing in Spain and Holland. She attended World Shibori Symposiums in Mexico and Japan.
Annie loves sharing this passion for natural colour. She teaches workshops in Sydney, and has taught three 5 day workshops in Bellingen (and is returning this January.)
She works from her home studio in Sydney, where she explores using colours from earth and plants to create watercolour paints, inks, soft pastels, fabric dyes and botanical prints.

THE workshop outlined

On the first day we will use linen and silk.(which I have already prepared.)

We will then make up a mordant and treat the fabric which you have brought, for use on the second day. This fabric should be washed in a hot long cycle using pH neutral soap (wool wash, lux flakes or grated sunlight soap.) Silk should be washed on a gentle cycle with pH neutral soap.

Students to bring:

PPE - mask, 2 pairs washing up gloves, apron (or wear old clothes) notebook and pen

2 buckets

hairdryer in case of wet weather

1.5m - 2m fabric - either linen, cotton, hemp or silk – or a mixture of these. NO WOOL.

2m thick fabric such as terry towelling or sweatshirt fabric. This is used on top of the foliage you are printing with to cushion it so we can roll it into a bundle. This is called a blanket (but it isn’t wool - unless that’s all you have.) Foliage from your garden/friends/flower market/bush- walk. A few suggestions are:

geraniums, grevillea, casuarina, feijoa, rose leaves or blackberry leaves (not rose petals) nandina/heavenly bamboo, Cotinus (smoke bush) marigolds, cosmos, of course eucalyptus, tansy, bauhinia, liquid amber, Japanese maple, grandfathers beard. Bring some for your use, and some to share.

There is a $30 materials fee to cover prepared fabrics on first day, mordants, tannins and gas cylinders etc.

Notebook and pen, lunch.

Supplied by TUTOR

The tutor will provide mordanted fabrics and blankets for use on the first day, as well as dye pots, gas cylinders, mordants, barriers, sticks for rolling bundles.
