BOROONDARA PROMS BRINGS BRASS, PIPES AND VOICES TO HAWTHORNSaturday 7 November 2026 | 7.30pm | Hawthorn Arts Centre
One of Boroondara’s great community music traditions returns to Hawthorn Arts Centre this November, bringing together the power of a full brass band, choir and pipe band — and an audience very much expected to join in.
Presented by Skunkworks Community, the Boroondara Proms will bring Glenferrie Brass, Camberwell Chorale and Hawthorn Pipe Band together on Saturday 7 November for a big night of live music, solo performances and community singing.
Joining the three ensembles are acclaimed vocalist Matthew Hetherington, euphonium soloist James Blackford and compere Patrick Lawrence, who will guide the audience through an evening designed to be heard, shared and sung.
The Proms celebrates something increasingly important in a city full of professional arts experiences: the extraordinary music being made within our own communities.
Musicians and singers from across Boroondara will share the Hawthorn Arts Centre stage, combining the distinctive sounds of brass, massed voices and pipes in a program that moves from stirring large-scale repertoire to familiar music the audience can sing along with.
For Skunkworks Community, that sense of participation is at the heart of the event.
“Boroondara has an extraordinary community of musicians, singers and ensembles, and the Proms is a chance to bring them together in one room,” said Skunkworks Community’s Phillipa Edwards OAM.
“We want people to come along for a great night of music, but we also want them to feel part of it. There is something quite special about hundreds of people sharing live music together — particularly when the audience gets to sing as well.”
The Boroondara Proms also reflects Skunkworks Community’s broader philosophy of Creating Community Through Music — bringing ensembles, musicians and audiences together rather than working in isolation.
With Glenferrie Brass, Camberwell Chorale and Hawthorn Pipe Band each having strong connections to the local community, the concert is both a showcase of Boroondara’s musical life and a celebration of the people who keep community music thriving.
