Onsite Book Discussion & Tour For Bowers Members Only: A Book Club ExperienceBooks at Bowers: Touring Through the Pages is a Bowers Docent Guild sponsored book club that pairs a topical book with a museum art experience.
The October book selection is a memoir, Life with Picasso, written by Francoise Gilot and journalist and art critic Carlton Lake. Gilot’s book recounts the ten years she was with Picasso, meeting him by chance at a restaurant in Paris in May 1943, during the German occupation—to the bitter aftermath of their breakup. Gilot is 21 and the mother of two of his children, and Picasso is forty years her senior. The insightful story of the larger-than-life figure of Picasso shows him as a brilliant but insecure artist and a loving but tyrannical man. “The book's intellectual heft is in its art criticism, even as its emotional arc lies in Picasso and Gilot's unequal romance.” (Tom Vitale, NPR, June 2019) Copyright 1964, 358 pages, audio and paperback.
