About this Event
For over two decades, Kathi Zellweger worked inside North Korea, delivering humanitarian aid to a population few outsiders ever meet. Her new memoir, Miss Kathi: Saving Lives in North Korea, recounts what she saw, whom she helped, and what it took to gain access to one of the most closed societies on earth.
Join Asia Society Southern California for a conversation between Zellweger and journalist Mike Chinoy, her longtime collaborator and co-author, about the book and the world it describes.
Between 1995 and 2019, Zellweger made 75 trips to North Korea. From 2006 to 2011, she lived in Pyongyang as director of the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation, and earlier, she founded an NGO supporting children in institutions and people with disabilities in the country. Chinoy, a former CNN Senior Asia Correspondent, has traveled to North Korea 17 times over his career and brings his own deep knowledge of the region to their discussion.
Zellweger and Chinoy will talk about what humanitarian work looks like in a country largely closed to the outside world, and what years of unusual access taught them about its people.
