GREENWICH, Conn. — From discovering new species of frogs in the Amazon to traveling by camel caravan across the Gobi Desert, Robert McCracken Peck has spent nearly fifty years documenting some of the world's most extraordinary scientific expeditions. On Thursday, Dogwood Books welcomes the acclaimed author, historian, photographer, and naturalist for a fascinating evening celebrating his newest book, Travels on the Edge.
As the longtime official photographer, historian, and chronicler of expeditions for the Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University, Peck has journeyed to some of the most remote corners of the globe. His adventures include studying wildlife in Mongolia, collecting new species in the Amazon and Orinoco River basin, exploring little-known regions of Africa and the Caribbean, witnessing the fall of the Berlin Wall, and navigating encounters with headhunters in Ecuador and government officials in China.
Peck is a Senior Fellow of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University and holds degrees from Princeton University and the University of Delaware. He is the author of numerous books, including Land of the Eagle: A Natural History of North America, which accompanied the acclaimed BBC/PBS television series and was recognized by The New York Times Book Review as one of the year's notable science books. In recognition of his fieldwork, one of the three frog species he helped discover in Ecuador was named in his honor.
