▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
Ten years after the death of Leonard Cohen, biographer Christophe Lebold looks back on the life and work of the Canadian singer, composer and writer. In an in-depth biography and analysis of Cohen’s oeuvre, he highlights the different facets of the artist. Together with Klara-presenter and Cohen-fan Lies Steppe, he discusses Cohen’s writing, love life, struggle with drugs, fascination for religion and his philosophical and poetic work.
writer
Troubadour, philosopher, ladies’ man, Buddhist monk, painter, dandy: Leonard Cohen wore many hats and wore each with equal style, but the writer’s hat suited him best. He wrote novels and poetry long before he released his first album in 1967, and his song lyrics deserve their own place in world literature.
biographer
Christophe Lebold is an expert in American literature and got to know Leonard Cohen personally. In The Man Who Saw the Angels Fall , he has written the definitive biography of the modern bard, one in which he offers an erudite analysis of Cohen’s work. Lebold looks at both Cohen’s turbulent love life and struggle with drugs, as well as his endless fascination for religion and the philosophical and poetic richness of his body of work.
artist
Almost ten years to the day after his death, we join Lebold in looking back at the many facets of the mysterious figure that Leonard Cohen was. Voice of Klara and musician, Lies Steppe acquired her love of Cohen’s music from her parents and is thus the ideal partner in conversation.
about the author
Christophe Lebold is an associate professor at the University of Strasbourg. His doctoral research focused on the work of Leonard Cohen and Bob Dylan. His deep admiration for Leonard Cohen is what led him to travelling extensively in the poet’s footsteps. Alongside his academic activities, he is a theatre actor and zen practitioner. He finds joy in poets, cats, and (when he’s in a cheerful mood) all living things.
about the moderator
Lies Steppe is a radio producer and presenter. Every Friday on Klara, she catapults you into the weekend with So What!?, where she offers you a personal take on jazz and related genres. On Sunday evening she serves up jazz classics in Round Midnight, and on Monday she presents Klara in Concert. She enjoys interviewing musicians and, as moderator and host, looking over the wall with a sense of wonder.
