About this Event
As the gownsmen return to Cambridge for Michaelmas term in 1828, university constable Gregory Hardiman is called to a gruesome discovery on a coach from Great Yarmouth. His questions take him to the new School of Anatomy on Queen’s Lane, where medical students watch dissections – and the demand for fresh bodies creates an unsavoury trade.
Meanwhile, valuables are going missing at the Hoop Inn. When one of Gregory’s friends is suspected of being involved, the constable has to decide where his loyalties lie. And as he realises that any future happiness depends on facing his past, Gregory steels himself for a difficult confession.
Susan Grossey has been making her living from crime for over four decades – first as an anti-money laundering consultant and now as the author of historical crime fiction. Her Cambridge Hardiman mysteries are set in the 1820s and are narrated by university constable Gregory Hardiman. The books always reflect Susan’s fascination with the history of finance, justice and policing, and the latest in the series – Sawbones – was inspired by her discovery that in 1828 it was not illegal to steal a body because it was considered to be nobody’s property.
The launch is free to attend but booking is essential.
