For more than 50 years, Peter de Waal has dedicated his life to improving the lives and documenting the histories of gay men and women in Australia. Alongside his dearly beloved Peter 'Bon' Bonsall-Boone, de Waal is himself an important figure in rainbow history: a foundation member of the Campaign Against Moral Persecution (CAMP), the sapling from which Australia’s rainbow community would eventually grow. In 1972, de Waal and Bonsall-Boone appeared on ABC TV’s Chequerboard, sharing Australia’s first televised gay male kiss. They want on to march in the first Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras parade and subsequents protests in 1978.
Following last year’s release of the raw and compelling memoir 'It Wasn’t Dutch Courage', the 88-year-young de Waal has now directed his pen to historical creative non-fiction. A collection of beautifully written short-lived histories, 'Hidden Lives, Silenced Histories' gives a heart-wrenching human voice to about 40 men plucked from de Waal’s 'Unfit for Publication' archives.
