Communications at Goldsmiths, University of London, is a founding member of the Media Reform Coalition, and writes for Declassified UK and Counterfire.
Here is one paragraph taken from a blog Des written for Polity Press.
“I wrote ‘Capitalism and the Media’ out of pure frustration that long-standing capitalist imperatives aren’t foregrounded more systematically when talking about the technologies, routines, possibilities and crises that dominate contemporary societies. The book rejects the notions both that we can afford to ignore capitalism and that we have moved beyond it. In particular, it challenges the claim that the prevalence of digital technologies and informational assets means that capitalism is an insufficient explanatory framework for understanding the contemporary world. Big tech companies are just as tied into exploitation and hierarchy as their analogue predecessors while the struggle between capital and labour remains just as relevant. We may be seeing the emergence of new business models, new sources of profitability and new pressure points in global trade but these need to be located in relation, and not counterposed, to capitalist imperatives.”
