What happens when a French winemaker decides he's had enough of the rules and heads for the California sunshine? Something rather fabulous, as it turns out!
In 1998, Bordeaux winemaker Stephan Asseo packed his bags and headed to Paso Robles, determined to escape the restrictions of France's traditional appellation system and make wines exactly as he wanted.
The result was L'Aventure Winery, where French winemaking expertise meets California's extraordinary terroir, and Bordeaux and Rhône grape varieties are free to mingle in ways that would raise a few eyebrows back home!
Today, L'Aventure produces some of Paso Robles' most celebrated wines, combining the richness and generosity of California fruit with the structure, elegance and finesse of their French heritage.
This WEDNESDAY 11/4, we're pouring three fabulous wines from the 2022 vintage, all scoring 95 points or higher from James Suckling...
🍷 Optimus 2022 — 95 Points, James Suckling
A rich, expressive blend of Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot. Think blackberry, peppery herbs, violets and a hint of mocha, with beautiful balance and supple tannins. A delicious introduction to the L'Aventure style.
🍷 Côte à Côte 2022 — 96 Points, James Suckling
A Rhône-inspired blend led by Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre. Bursting with dark cherries, wild herbs and spice, with a lovely mineral edge. Generous, elegant and wonderfully expressive.
🍷 Estate Reserve 2022 — 97 Points, James Suckling
And now for the grand finale! L'Aventure's flagship blend of Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot delivers layers of cassis, black raspberry, violets and peppery spice. Powerful yet beautifully refined, with impressive structure and a long, lingering finish.
