Board Recruitment & Retention: Building an Engaged and Effective Board
Strong boards do not happen by accident. They are built through an intentional and ongoing process of identifying the knowledge, skills, lived experiences, relationships and perspectives an organization needs, and creating a board experience that enables people to contribute meaningfully once they join.
This experiential workshop will help participants move beyond filling vacant seats toward developing a thoughtful approach to board composition, recruitment, orientation, engagement and succession. Through facilitated discussion, reflection exercises and practical scenarios, participants will explore what the organization needs from its board at this stage of its development, where important gaps may exist, and how to reach potential candidates who reflect the diversity of the organization’s membership and community. The workshop will also examine the factors that influence board member retention, including role clarity, inclusive practices, effective meetings, meaningful participation, ongoing learning, recognition and opportunities for leadership.
Participants will leave with practical tools that will include a board skills and diversity matrix, job description, recruitment and succession plan, board application and interview questions, orientation checklist, engagement assessment and annual board development calendar. Together, these tools will help the organization build a stronger pipeline of prospective leaders while creating a board culture in which members feel welcomed, valued, informed and motivated to be involved.
Afternoon Session (12:30 PM to 2:30 PM)
Effective Fundraising: Building Sustainable Community Support
Effective fundraising is not simply about asking for money, it is about clearly communicating an organization’s purpose, building authentic relationships and giving people meaningful opportunities to contribute to work they care about. This highly participatory workshop will help board members, staff and volunteers better understand the building blocks of a sustainable and diversified fundraising program and the distinct roles they can play in its success.
Through practical exercises, group discussion and real-life scenarios, participants will assess the organization’s current fundraising readiness, identify its most compelling strengths and stories, explore potential sources of support, and map the journey from initial community awareness to long-term donor engagement. Topics will include developing a strong case for support, identifying and qualifying prospective donors, annual giving, major gifts, sponsorships, donor stewardship, fundraising ethics and creating a culture in which fundraising is understood as a shared organizational responsibility.
Participants will leave with practical tools that will include a case-for-support framework, prospect identification and prioritization matrix, donor engagement continuum, stewardship checklist and fund development planning template tailored to the organization’s priorities and capacity.
The series is delivered by Sari Labelle, who has worked with more than 100 organizations across Alberta, Ontario, Quebec, the Atlantic provinces and internationally, amassing a wealth of expertise in managing non-profit organizations and programs.
