Participants in this workshop will experience the various steps involved in creating block printed cards. Guests can select an original, premade design for their cards, or draw their own!
We will learn how to transfer the design to a rubber printing block, and explore techniques for carving out the design. Once carved out, guests will use their stamp block to print a set of 5 paper bi-fold cards with block printing ink. Participants will take home their set of hand-printed cards, envelopes, and their carved stamp block.
ABOUT THE INSTRUCTER
Olivia Yuen creates block prints inspired by a variety of subject matter including botany, the Arizona desert, and her unique biracial (Mexican + Chinese) heritage. Each print begins as an original drawing, which is then transferred onto a block of linoleum. The negative space areas of the design are then carefully carved out. Once fully carved, each block is inked using oil based relief printing inks and hand-pressed. This method of printing by hand allows for subtle differences to emerge in the prints -- giving each one an organic, handmade touch.
With nearly a decade of classroom art education experience, sharing her passion for the arts with others is an important aspect of Olivia’s art practice. She teaches linocut printmaking and other art workshops catered to students of all ages and ability levels.
