Have you long admired the beautiful printed bandanas, scarves, and other textiles and wondered how they are done? Well wonder no longer, as in this class we will learn the art of block printing on fabric to create our very own custom designed bandana. This three-hour class will cover the basics of designing, carving, inking, and printing a custom stamp on a fabric base. Each student will have the opportunity to print one oversized (27″x27″) cotton bandana with a custom stamp of their own creation.
* Hour one will be dedicated to print design. Students will learn how to create a seamless repeating design in order to use a small printing block to cover a large expanse of fabric. Students are also free to design their own stamp of choice, if they do not want a full tiled design! This is where we will discuss elements of design as it relates to carving in relief, including how to design “in the negative”.
* Hour two will be transferring your design to your rubber block, and actually carving the stamp. We will be using an easy carve 4×6″ rubber block and Speedball carving tools with a variety of blades.
* Hour three will be all about printing! Plenty of time will be allotted for students to fully print their bandana so they can leave the class with a finished product. We will go over the special supplies and techniques needed for fabric block printing as opposed to paper prints, and students will take their finished block home with them in addition to the bandana.
This class is open to all experience levels, ages 14 and up. We will be working with sharp tools and messy inks, please plan ahead and dress for a mess! All supplies are provided.
ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR
Ellie Burton is the office coordinator of the Magic Valley Arts Council, and moonlights as a self-taught printmaker in her spare time. She has taught several printmaking classes for MVAC, and has had her work shown in a variety of gallery shows and competitions in the Southern Idaho region.
