Blender is a free and open-source 3D computer graphics software tool set that runs on Windows, MacOS, BSD, Haiku, and Linux. It can be downloaded at www.blender.org for free!
Blender is used in Hollywood for special effects, animation, for architectural pre-visualization, motion graphics and as well as for creating 3-D files for printing.
This class is designed for those interested in learning to use the program Blender with no prior knowledge required. The class will start on Tuesday evening October 6 from 7 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. and continue Tuesday evenings through November 3.
You will learn the basics of Blender including:
- Setting up Blender’s User Preferences to make your work flow and learning easier.
- The concepts of 3-D and vocabulary of Blender terms.
- How to model objects for 3-D printing and for rendering as images or animations.
- The basics of Materials and Textures for your 3-D Objects and Scenes in Blender
- The basics of Rigging, Shape Keys and Key Frames to Animate Objects
- Lighting your scenes.
- How to Render both still images and animations.
- Exporting files for 3-D Printing.
What you need for the class: A laptop and 3 button mouse. Please download Blender 5.2 LTS or newer for Free at the website www.blender.org to be ready for the class. A 3 button mouse is mandatory for the class. Your mouse must include a left and right button as well as a scroll wheel (the third button).

The age range for the class is 13 + and anyone under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a guardian.
Byron Kindig is a graduate of the University of South Florida. He has been using the 3D animation software suite, Blender, since 2002 and has been teaching Blender since 2005. He organized the first Blender Conference in the United States in 2007 as well as two more conferences since then.
Besides teaching Blender in Kingsport a number of times and once in Casper Wyoming at Casper College, he also offers individual tutoring in person and virtually.
He has presented demonstrations of Blender at the Kingsport Art Guild twice, 5 times at the Kingsport Maker Faire, the University of Virginia, in Wise, and at the Geek Out Conference in Asheville.
