About this Event
During this workshop your host Sanne will introduce you to the history of blackwork embroidery. We'll be practising embroidery techniques based on examples from museums and learn different ways of adding blackwork embroidery to your own garments.
What the workshop will look like:
- You'll get an overview of the history of blackwork embroidery, its historical and modern aplications and the kinds of techniques that you can use to create a beautiful result.
- We'll start by practicing a variety of designs during the workshops, that you can continue at home (you'll be given an embroidery hoop, black thread, a needle and printed patterns to take home).
- During the workshop you can choose from a few different options, depending on what you're keen to try out! You can use modern aida embroidery fabric or go for a more traditional linen, which takes some extra concentration.
- In the 2nd half of the workshop you'll learn how to apply blackwork embroidery to your own garments. For this you can bring a shirt to decorate the cuffs, or you can learn the technique on a piece of fabric that I'll provide.
What to bring:
If you’d like to decorate the cuffs off a shirt, please bring a white or off white button up shirt of your choice (or something smilar). This colour will let the black or red thread will show up beautifully. A linen or cotton shirt with a little bit of texture will look especially nice. Avoid anything slipery/shiny and make sure that the cuffs aren't too thick to get a needle through. You can choose a modern button up shirt or maybe a blouse with lovely wide sleeves, but you'll need them to have a cuff of at least 5 cm to fit the design. Anyone who doesn't bring a shirt on the day can practice the technique on fabric in an embroidery hoop.
Extra information:
- All other needed items will be supplied. You’ll be able to take your needle, thread, pattern and embroidery hoop home after the workshop to continue working on your piece.
- No previous embroidery or other crafting experience is needed.
- Accessibility: the event space is up a flight of stairs (there is unfortunately no elevator available). If you have any other questions, please send me a message.
- I always try to reuse as many materials as possible, so this workshop will use some materials that have been sourced second hand.
- I usually capture little bits of the event with some photos and video clips. If you'd prefer not have your face featured, please let me know on the day.
