Mario Bava is known for his exquisite use of color. But the light and shadow are just as ravishing in the black-and-white shocker Black Sunday, also the Italian horror maestro’s first feature as a director. Barbara Steele stars as the vampire-witch Asa, who’s spitting brimstone as she’s tied to a stake and tortured with an iron mask lined with spikes in the opening scene. Her body is then laid to rest in her noble family’s catacomb, but her spirit survives for centuries on nothing but her malevolent desire for revenge. Steele’s face is a masterpiece of angles, and under Bava’s lights she looks stunningly evil — or just stunning, when she takes the form of her descendant Katia. A must-see for hateful women and lovers of deep, dark pools of black.
