About this Event
Join us for an evening of black holes and electrons as we welcome authors Brian Clegg, Jonas Enander, Frank Verstraete and Celine Broeckart to this physics panel. Together these physicists, astrophysicists, and writers will take us through the mysteries of the universe, from the smallest particles to the vast expanses of space. Though we can't say for sure that you'll understand quantum physics afterwards, we know this will be an unforgettable evening!
The Electron
As a fundamental particle, the electron is central to an understanding of the nature of matter. In this fascinating book, Brian Clegg reveals a remarkable story of scientific wonder and innovation, and paints a compelling picture of one of the most essential components of life itself.
Facing Infinity
Black holes aren't just cosmic mysteries - they're surprisingly essential to life on Earth. In Facing Infinity, translated from the Swedish by Nichola Smalley, astrophysicist Jonas Enander takes us on an extraordinary journey from eighteenth-century Britain to cutting-edge observatories around the world, revealing how the universe's darkest phenomena illuminate both our origins and future.
Why Nobody Understands Quantum Physics
Deftly making the seemingly impenetrable world of quantum physics accessible to ordinary mortals, this husband-and-wife duo – renowned physicist Frank Verstraete and writer Céline Broeckaert – demystify the essential science behind how our world works. Together, they unravel the reasons the universe behaves in its weird ways and just why it's so important to understand them.
Brian Clegg is a popular science writer whose Dice World and A Brief History of Infinity were both longlisted for the Royal Society Prize for Science Books. He has written for publications including Nature, The Times and BBC Focus.
Jonas Enander has a PhD in physics, having conducted research in cosmology and astrophysics. He currently works as a research communicator at the Oskar Klein Centre in Stockholm. He has participated in the construction of the IceCube observatory at the South Pole, Antarctica and regularly writes about physics and astronomy for various popular science magazines. Facing Infinity is his first book.
Nichola Smalley is a translator from Swedish and Norwegian. She has twice been longlisted for the International Booker Prize and is an Oxford-Weidenfeld Translation Prize winner.
Frank Verstraete is the Leigh Trapnell Professor of Quantum Physics at the University of Cambridge. He has received several prestigious prizes for his research, including the Lieben Prize (also known as the ‘Nobel Prize of Austria’) and the Francqui Prize. He is among the leading researchers in the world on quantum physics. Céline Broeckaert is a Romance languages scholar, playwright and author. She co-founded Filmpact, an impact organization which uses documentary film as a tool for social change and ecological awareness. Why Nobody Understands Quantum Physics is their first book together.
This event is supported by the Swedish Arts Council and the Embassy of Sweden, UK as part of the Stories From Sweden programme.
