Beat Root Revival isn’t your typical roots duo, and they’ve never had much interest in sounding like one. Andrea Magee, from Belfast, Northern Ireland, and Ben Jones, from Kent, England, found their musical meeting ground in Austin, Texas, creating a sound where folk, blues, country, rock ’n’ roll and Celtic soul collide. Armed with guitars, a bodhrán, percussion and powerhouse harmonies, they have an uncanny ability to make two people sound like a full band. Their music has carried them from the stage of London’s legendary Hammersmith Apollo to the equally storied Gruene Hall in the heart of Texas, a fitting span for a duo whose story has always been shaped by two sides of the Atlantic.Their recorded story began with Waiting on a Miracle, an early collection that introduced the raw, roots-driven chemistry at the heart of the band. That was followed in 2016 by their self-titled album, Beat Root Revival, an eleven-song record that brought their transatlantic influences into sharper focus. Recorded in Austin and released through Toulouse Records, the album showcased the pair as multi-instrumentalists as well as songwriters, moving from the drive of “The Revolution Starts Tonight” and “Russian Roulette” to songs such as “Fire,” “Forever” and “Reasons to Believe.” It was a record that established the musical blueprint Beat Root Revival would continue to expand upon: Ben’s blues and rock ’n’ roll instincts meeting Andrea’s Irish and folk roots head-on.
The road has put Beat Root Revival in some remarkable company. They spent three years opening for Brian Wilson on his Pet Sounds world tour and have toured and shared stages with artists including Brian Setzer, Jeff Bridges, Lake Street Dive and The Fixx. In 2019, they took that road-tested sound into the studio for Up, released on Surfdog Records and produced by legendary Butthole Surfers guitarist and acclaimed producer Paul Leary, whose credits include Sublime and Meat Puppets. The result captured what Beat Root Revival does best: grit and melody, roots and rock ’n’ roll, two distinct musical backgrounds meeting somewhere in the middle.
Now, more than a decade into a musical journey built on highways, stages and songs, Beat Root Revival are preparing for their next chapter. Their forthcoming album, The Road to Babylon, is set for release in 2027. The record continues the story of two musicians who left their respective homes across the Atlantic, found each other on the road and built a sound that belongs entirely to them. Drawing on the miles travelled, the people encountered and the experiences gathered along the way, The Road to Babylon promises another evolution of the Beat Root Revival sound while staying connected to the roots, rhythm and restless spirit that have defined the duo from the beginning.
But the heart of Beat Root Revival still lives onstage: two voices, a storm of rhythm, a streak of Celtic fire and the kind of chemistry that can turn a quiet room into a foot-stomping revival. Whether in a Texas dance hall, a London theatre or somewhere on the long road between the two, Beat Root Revival remain what they have always been, two musicians, two countries and one unmistakable sound.
