The 42nd Home Tour and Art Auction in the historic mining town of Bisbee will take place on Friday and Saturday, November 27th and 28th, the two days following Thanksgiving. Hosted by the Bisbee Woman’s Club, this year’s event offers ticket holders a chance to explore seven private homes, two hotels, a mining-era social club, and a church between10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Throughout each day, attendees can also shop the cash & carry boutique, buy raffle tickets and bid on Auction art in the Serbian Hall at 216 Park Avenue (admission to the Hall is free). Tour attendees should return to the Serbian Hall to place final bids after the homes close at 4 on Saturday. The silent auction for all art begins at 4:45 p.m., and bidders must be present to win.
The Serbian Hall, the base of operations for this year’s tour, was built as a social club in 1939 by the men of Bisbee’s strong South Slavic community. It was an outgrowth of an early benevolent society, which provided insurance & burials for members as well as religious and cultural education for children. Fifteen years later after many fundraisers, the community built the Saint Stephen Nemanja Serbian Orthodox Church next door; at the time, it was the only Eastern Orthodox Church in the state. Fitting for a copper mining town, the cross, dome, and doors were made of that metal. All the labor was done by Serbian volunteers, with materials purchased as they were needed. The church will be open to ticket holders on both days.
The BWC is an all-volunteer service 501(c)(3) organization founded in 1900, one of the oldest philanthropic organizations in the state. Their vision is to foster a more educated, empowered and engaged community; to that end Club President Susie Morss notes, “All proceeds from this fundraiser go directly into grants and scholarships in our community, as well as helping us to maintain our historic Clubhouse.”
Built in 1902 on land leased for $1/year from mining company Phelps Dodge, the Clubhouse served as a gathering place for early Club members. The women took out a loan and hired local architect Frederick C. Hurst to design the building, which played a significant role in the town during the 20th century, hosting cultural, educational, and social programs for residents. It is the oldest continuously operating women’s club clubhouse in the state of Arizona and was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in1985.
Home Tour tickets are $20 and are available online or at the Serbian Hall on both days; maps of tour home locations will be available there. Plan to stay the night so you can enjoy all the art, music, diverse restaurants, and mile-high scenery that greater Bisbee has to offer – after all, your ticket is good for both days!
