About this Event
Join WURD Radio for our annual Black History Month signature event as we recognize the life and legacy of Billy Preston — the legendary keyboardist, bandleader, and songwriter known to many as the “Fifth Beatle.”
Taking place at the Barnes Foundation on Benjamin Franklin Parkway, this event offers a powerful opportunity to celebrate Black musical excellence, community, and storytelling during Black History Month.
The evening features a screening of the acclaimed documentary Billy Preston: That’s the Way God Planned It, tracing Preston’s remarkable journey from gospel prodigy to one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century. His work helped shape rock, soul, and pop music through collaborations with artists including The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Aretha Franklin, and countless others.
Following the film, stay for a panel discussion exploring Preston’s musical legacy, cultural impact, and enduring influence. Panelists include:
- Paris Barclay, Film Director, Billy Preston: That’s The Way God Planned It
- Dyana Williams, journalist, documentarian and co-founder of Black Music Month
- Orrin Evans, Philadelphia jazz pianist
As part of the evening, attendees will also enjoy an exclusive preview from WURD Radio’s Freedom Journeys series, our ongoing project documenting the stories of phenomenal Black figures who have shaped history and culture.
