Join us on Thursday, Nov. 5, at 7 PM for a Big Ideas Lecture in Arts & Culture with Shelley Niro.
Big Ideas in Art & Culture features established artists whose practice pushes the edge of what it means to be an artist who engages with the myriad, multi-dimensional environments that compose our world.
This lecture will be presented by Shelley Niro, who is a member of the Turtle Clan, Bay of Quinte Mohawk Six Nations Grand River Reserve. Niro is conscious of the impact that post-colonial mediums have had on Indigenous people. Like many artists from different Native communities, she works relentlessly to present people in realistic and explorative portrayals. Photo series such as Mohawks in Beehives, This Land is Mime Land, and M: Stories of Women are a few examples in this genre of artwork. Her recent films include The Incredible 25th Year of Mitzi Bearclaw (2018) and Café Daughter (2022).
“Big Ideas is a great premise for a gathering. Any idea can be a big idea. The hardest part is getting started. Often, when I’m about to start a project, I will go through the virtual process of making something. It can be self-defeating. I will think to myself, I can’t do that. However, give it time to take root and usually something will appear. It might not be what you were thinking about initially and quite often it is not in the direction you were headed. My Big Ideas lecture will go through some of my creative struggles to show that in the end we must continue to make our ideas formulate and find resolution. As a participant in society, we acknowledge we are inventing, researching and looking for small conclusions in finding answers we cannot always see.” — Shelley Niro
