The Big Ideas Lecture Series brings faculty from the School of Arts, Culture, & Society at Arapahoe Community College into the community to share fresh insights around questions connected to the arts, humanities, and social sciences. Hosted by the Bemis Library, each talk is free, public, and designed to spark thought and conversation.“Who Owns Music?” by Dr. Erin Bauer, ACC Dean of Arts, Culture, & Society
What happens when music leaves the community that created it? Who gets to play it, change it, or claim it as their own? Texas-Mexican conjunto music emerged along the U.S.–Mexico border as a distinctly local, working-class musical tradition and became a powerful expression of cultural identity. But over the past several decades, conjunto has traveled far beyond the borderlands, into rock and country music, across the United States, and to musicians and audiences around the world.
Drawing on the story of legendary accordionist Flaco Jiménez and her research on the globalization of conjunto, musicologist Erin Bauer explores what happens when musical traditions cross geographic, cultural, and social boundaries. Along the way, we'll consider questions of migration, cultural exchange, hybridity, appropriation, and authenticity and ask a deceptively difficult question: who, if anyone, owns a musical tradition?
