You harvested the deer and the steak's ready for dinner. BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE!We will learn easy, low waste ways to use deer fat by making a soothing balm and a hand poured candle. This workshop covers safe rendering and straining techniques, simple balm formulation/making, and candle making methods that you can repeat at home. Participants will discuss how to work with frozen deer fat. Storage, labeling, and basic shelf-life considerations for tallow products will be addressed.
Everyone will make and take home a sample jar of heel balm and one tea light candle. A printed handout will include directions for heel balm, body butter, candles, and fire starters so you can recreate the projects at home.
Please wear old clothes. Hairnet will be provided and CLOSED TOES SHOES ARE REQUIRED. We will emphasize clean handling and food grade practices to avoid contamination.
