The Pew Research Center reports Republicans and Democrats are more divided along ideological lines – and partisan antipathy is deeper and more extensive – than at any point in the last two decades. Despite persisting political polarization in the American public, Flora Kim, a fellow at the Cornell Center for Democracy, shows how when people from across the spectrum sit down together, they often find far more agreement than they initially expect. The Braver Angels’ Citizens Commission on Immigration has synthesized points of unanimous agreement reached by Republicans and Democrats in more than 35 Common Ground Workshops. Drawing on her research with the Commission, the program explores why one of the country’s most divisive issues is also a place where consensus is possible. Using immigration policy as a case study, Flora will share what this work suggests about how depolarization begins: not by convincing and winning arguments, but by building relationships.Flora Kim, Cornell Center for Democracy Fellow
