Join us at Pembroke Auditorium for an evocative evening of British song, folklore and seascapes with acclaimed mezzo-soprano Beth Taylor and pianist Joseph Middleton.Lauded by The Guardian for her “dark and focused” voice, “sensational coloratura” and “spectacular singing,” and by The Times for her “fierce, indeed terrifying” portrayals, Glaswegian Beth Taylor is one of today’s most electrifying young mezzo-sopranos.
This evocative programme explores the rich landscape of British song, bringing together music by Francis George Scott, Herbert Howells, Erik Chisholm, Ethel Smyth, Rebecca Clarke and Germaine Tailleferre, alongside traditional Orcadian song.
The evening culminates in Elgar’s magnificent Sea Pictures — a cycle of five songs inspired by the sea, including Sea Slumber Song, In Haven, Sabbath Morning at Sea, Where Corals Lie and The Swimmer.
The programme also features Ethel Smyth’s evocative Three Moods of the Sea, Rebecca Clarke’s The Seal Man, and The Grey Selkie of Sule Skerrie, a traditional Orcadian song arranged by Cameron Biles-Liddell.
