Beneath the Veil of Synchronicity – the psyche and matter problem
This presentation explores the psyche– matter problem through the lens of synchronicity as developed by C. G. Jung, in dialogue with Wolfgang Pauli and later elaborated by Marie-Louise von Franz. Instead of treating mind and matter as separate realms, we follow Jung’s proposal that synchronistic events—acausal, meaningful coincidences linking inner states and outer happenings—hint at a deeper order in which psyche and physical reality are coordinated. This is a deep mystery that Jung has opened a door to, but we have barely stepped through. In this talk, we will interpret a potent dream that sheds light on this problem of psyche and matter through the lens of synchronicity.
Some parallels of quantum physics and Jung’s depth psychology will be made as both demand an attitude of paradox when facing life whether it be the world outside of us or the world within. It is curious that the development of quantum physics and depth psychology occurred at around the same point in history (early 1900’s) – likely a synchronicity in itself. In the West we live in a split viewpoint of inner and outer. Facing one way and then another. It is through the individuation process that this split can be healed.
Presenter | Robert Matthews
Robert Matthews is a Swiss trained Jungian Analyst in private practice in Adelaide and is the current President of the C.G. Jung Society of South Australia. He is also a Senior Lecturer in the School of Education at the University of South Australia, teaching classroom management and the application of neuroscience in education.
He has a PhD in theoretical physics and has recently published the book, “The Paradoxical Meeting of Depth Psychology and Physics: Reflections on the Unification of Psyche and Matter” Click here for details of the book.
