Reimers Auditorium welcomes two extraordinary musicians whose work reflects the depth and diversity of New Orleans musical culture.Clarinetist Dr. Ben Redwine has built a career performing across the worlds of classical music and traditional jazz. A former member of the U.S. military band system and university professor, he has performed with orchestras and ensembles across four continents. Since moving to the New Orleans area he has become a regular performer with the Louisiana Philharmonic and Baton Rouge Symphony Orchestras.
Joining him is Don Vappie. A musician, composer and educator, Vappie is widely recognized for his distinctive tenor banjo style and his work preserving and advancing New Orleans Creole musical traditions. A New Orleans native, he has performed around the world and has collaborated on recordings and film projects while remaining deeply connected to the musical traditions of his hometown. In 2021 he received the Steve Martin Banjo Prize.
Together they offer an evening that brings together the sounds of traditional jazz with the broader musical traditions that have made New Orleans one of the world’s great centers of music.
This is a chance to experience two accomplished artists whose work is deeply connected to the history of this place while continuing to push that tradition forward.
