MA Curatorial Practice and MFA Photography, Video and Related Media at the School of Visual Arts in New York are thrilled to present renowned moving-image artist Ben Hagari’s Hide and Shade, a contemporary interpretation of Indonesian shadow theater, featuring puppeteer Matthew Cohen, filmed at the Yale University Art Gallery. Hide and Shade captures the abiding spirit of traditional shadow theater, which dates back to the 10th century, with its fabulous evocations of the sacred and social order; of myth, community, hidden worlds of the divine, and the struggles of the human realm. At once dazzling, ghostly, and serene, Hide and Shade - so typical of Hagari’s work - is captivated by the magic of theater, both for audiences and performers, presenting and pulling back the curtain of imagined worlds.
After the screening on Friday, November 20, Hagari will be in conversation with Steven Henry Madoff and Charles Traub.
