Nonprofit executive and long-time community advocate Belinda Drake officially announced her candidacy for the Indianapolis City-County Council representing District 8.
Running to ensure every neighborhood has a representative who listens, shows up, and delivers results, Drake brings over 20 years of local residence, civic leadership, and municipal board experience to her campaign.
"Every neighborhood in District 8 deserves a representative who puts residents back at the center of local government," said Drake. "As a business executive, community leader, and neighbor living in Mapleton-Fall Creek, I’ve spent my career bringing people together, solving complex challenges, and expanding access to vital resources. I am running to restore integrity to public service and ensure local government works transparently and effectively for everyone."
Drake holds a Master of Science in Organizational Leadership from Martin University and a B.A. in Political Science from Indiana University Indianapolis. Her deep experience in local municipal governance includes completing five terms on the Indianapolis Board of Business and Neighborhood Services, where she helped oversee department budgets, review contracts, and promote fair practices for residents and businesses.
Drake’s platform centers on three core pillars dedicated to building a stronger, safer, and more vibrant District 8:
Responsible Community Development & Infrastructure: Drake will champion responsible growth that expands affordable housing while protecting longtime residents from displacement. Her platform prioritizes safer streets, improved sidewalks, better lighting, accessible parks, and strong support for District 8’s small businesses and commercial corridors.
Safe and Healthy Communities: Believing that safe neighborhoods require more than enforcement alone, Drake advocates for holistic public safety strategies. Her campaign supports targeted investments in violence prevention, youth employment, mentorship, reentry services, and transparent oversight of public safety agencies.
Mental Health and Wellness: Drake is committed to treating mental health as an essential foundation of community safety and stability. She will advocate for expanded city partnerships and funding for crisis prevention, addiction recovery, peer support, and culturally responsive care for youth, families, and seniors.
Drake emphasizes that resident engagement will be a defining hallmark of her leadership on the council. She promises to host regular town halls and community roundtables so neighbors have a direct voice in budgeting, zoning, and neighborhood decisions.
