About this Event
Often called the last European dictatorship, Belarus has been under the rule of president Aleksandr Lukashenko since 1994. Belarus has historically navigated its position between Russia and the West (the European Union and NATO) through a "multi-vector" foreign policy, though this balancing act has largely given way to a deeper dependency on Moscow, particularly after the protests of 2020-2021, and after Belarus lent its territory to Russia to attack Ukraine in February 2022. While the three Baltic states have sought to isolate Belarus, the recent detente between Lukashenko and Trump regimes pose new challenges for the neighbours of Belarus. Join us for a discussion of today's Belarus and its foreign relations with some of the most knowledgeable experts in the region.
