Thank you for your interest in our Beginning 4 Shaft Weaving Class! The Palouse Hills Weavers Guild is a volunteer-led group working together to host a semi-annual series of beginner and intermediate weaving workshops. Taught by guild member Caroline Levin, at our community venue in the heart of Moscow, the 1912 Center, the 2-day fall workshop is affordably priced, open to the public, and the perfect introduction to 4 shaft weaving.
This class is for you, if: you have a 4 or 8 shaft table or portable floor loom, and have not mastered how to warp and start weaving; OR it’s been forever since you did this last and would like a refresher; OR you are self-taught and feel like you’ve missed out on a cohesive understanding of warping and weaving basics.
What you’ll learn: How to use a warping board, warping with 2 ends in hand, tension, chaining the warp, floating selvedges, tricks for knots and stripes; rough sleying, transferring the cross, sleying and threading, checking for errors, spreading the warp, shuttle handling, fixing problems, how to tell which way the warp winds on. We will warp back to front in class and discuss the concept of warping front to back. And, learn to read a draft and weaving patterns, fill out a project sheet, and begin weaving plain weave and basic twill.
Class format: A little lecture and slideshow, lots of hands-on demonstrations and learn by doing; look at others’ work, see different pieces of equipment in action, and ask questions, write your own project notes. Everyone will have their own loom. And a few guild members will be on hand as helpers. Lunch break daily, the Guild will cater soup and sandwiches, or similar (with an effort to provide choices for common diet restrictions), and this is included.
The Guild does have a few pieces of equipment available for use, email if interested.
Materials students need to bring:
A 4-shaft loom with a 10, 12, or 15-dent reed. (8-shaft looms are fine but no Rigid Heddles)
Additional 5, 6, or 8 dent reed if you have it
Raddle if you have it
Chairs will be provided, but you might wish to bring a 24” stool
Warping board and clamp to hold it to the table if you have it
Warp packing material—such as warp sticks or heavy brown paper or two full size paper grocery bags
A threading hook and a sleying hook
1-2 shuttles, either stick shuttles or boat shuttles
A pencil, measuring tape, scissors
Some worsted weight waste yarn if you have it
Your distance glasses for the slide show
$18 cash for materials fee
Personal water bottle and mug if you wish to make use of the tea pot
