Carve Your Own Wooden Serving Spoon: Beginner Spoon Carving
Skill Level: Beginner (No experience required!)
Age Limit: 16+ (Ages 16–17 require parental permission)
Transform a rough greenwood blank into a custom, hand-carved serving spoon! In this hands-on workshop, you’ll learn the foundational skills of green woodworking using traditional hand tools. We'll cover tool safety, understanding wood grain, essential knife grips (Slöjd and hook knives), and applying a food-safe oil finish.
All tools, materials, and safety equipment are provided—just bring yourself and leave with a functional kitchen utensil you made from scratch! Note: we will work through lunch, so please bring a bagged lunch or snack to have during the class.
Based in Jonesborough, TN, Jay Jarman specializes in traditional green woodcarving inspired by Swedish Slöjd and Appalachian craftsmanship. Using only hand axes and carved knives, he crafts functional bowls and spoons from locally salvaged green hardwoods.
