Are you an artist eyeing electronics? Maybe cyberdeck curious? A mod synth builder? Tired of squirmy breadboards? Learn soldering!
About this Event

In this class you will learn how to properly use your soldering iron, what makes solder work, types of soldering, through-hole soldering techniques, desoldering and common soldering mistakes.

Absolute beginners are welcome! No experience is necessary for this class, just curiosity about how things work is enough. All tools and materials will be provided.

The class focuses on assembly and soldering technique, not designing a PCB (printed circuit board). But you will also learn the function of each of the components, including resistors, capacitors, LEDs, switches, power source and chips.

We will be soldering together a one player LED tile game called Conway's Game of Life, a mathematical game that simulates population growth/decline and creates an organic animated pattern. There are 38 components to solder, so you will be an expert at the end of class. Its easy once you know the right technique.

+++++++ Add a diffusing 3D printed case designed for the LED tile, and you have the iconic dance floor from Saturday Night Fever! Just press down on the case and it will reset the algorithm for a new LED pattern. The Disco Case is $18 as an add-on at check-out or during class. +++++

-No one under 18 may attend this class.

-If you need to cancel you can get a refund 72 before the class starts by emailing [email protected].

-Class starts sharply at Noon.

-Makephilia is run out of an apartment in Prospect Heights.

-Unfortunately there is no elevator and its on the 4th floor.

Makephilia was started in 2026 by Olivia Barr who has over 10 years experience soldering PCBs and has been teaching soldering at NYC Resistor for 5 years. She is the creater of NOT-A-CAMERA, the wearable camera that looks like a flat etching of a camera on wood or mirror acrylic and was sold at the Whitney Museum.

Olivia also teaches classes on laser cutting and co-hosts the Repair Cafe the first Saturday of every month at NYC Resistor. Repair Cafe is awesome and free so come check it out.
