About this Event

In this beginner's basketmaking course you'll be introduced to the tools and techniques of the heritage craft of willow weaving. Daisy will show you how to make your own shallow round basket, where you'll learn how to make a round base, stake up the base, weave the sides, and turn down the border. This basket is perfect for storing fruit, bread or household bits and bobs.

Workshop Tutor: Daisy Askins

I am an Ironbridge-based basketmaker and willow artist.

I first learnt basketmaking over 6 years ago, and have completed a City & Guilds Level 2 Diploma in Basketry. I am a recipient of Arts Council England funding, and am a member of the Heritage Crafts Association and Basketmakers Association. My pieces are regularly exhibited as part of the Shropshire-based artist-maker collective, Weave Only A Trace.

I enjoy sharing the creative and wellbeing benefits of basketmaking through facilitating workshops and community-led projects in and around Shropshire. I am able to draw on my previous experience as a landscape architect, environmental educator, and project facilitator to support my community-based work.

I have delivered willow workshops and sculpture commissions for various third sector and public organisations, including English Heritage, the Bumblebee Conservation Trust, Small Woods Association, Telford & Wrekin Council, RHS Tatton Park Flower Show, Designs in Mind, Birmingham City University, Walsall Leather Museum, and the Severn Gorge Countryside Trust.

Severn Gorge Countryside Trust

This workshop is being hosted by the Severn Gorge Countryside Trust, a local charity.

The Trust’s aim is to promote, protect and conserve the living landscape of the Ironbridge Gorge World Heritage Site, which has a diverse range of habitats, including wildflower meadows, woodlands and heathlands. But that’s not all! We maintain over 20 kilometres of footpaths, conserve and protect 60 historic structures, run exciting Outdoor Learning and Volunteering Programmes to encourage local people and visitors to engage with the natural environment in a variety of ways.

All proceeds from this workshop will support the work of the Severn Gorge Countryside Trust.
