In this beginner's basketmaking course you'll be introduced to the tools and techniques of the heritage craft of willow weaving. Daisy will show you how to make your own shallow round basket, where you'll learn how to make a round base, stake up the base, weave the sides, and turn down the border. This basket is perfect for storing fruit, bread or household bits and bobs.
Workshop Tutor: Sophie Francis
I am a basketmaker and willow artist inspired by the intersection between nature and human creativity. I work with traditional basketry techniques but also freely innovate with colour, form, and texture. Seeking to understand the constancy and change of the natural environment inspires my work. This includes growing my own willow in Shropshire, and working with sustainably coppiced green wood’s such as ash and hazel in basketry.
I teach in small group workshops, to encourage freedom in creativity both with materials and the weaving process. With a background in health and Social Anthropology I am focused on exploring how basketry as craft can offer therapeutic value, and increase our understanding of how we are firmly rooted in the natural world.

Severn Gorge Countryside Trust
This workshop is being hosted by the Severn Gorge Countryside Trust, a local charity.
The Trust’s aim is to promote, protect and conserve the living landscape of the Ironbridge Gorge World Heritage Site, which has a diverse range of habitats, including wildflower meadows, woodlands and heathlands. But that’s not all! We maintain over 20 kilometres of footpaths, conserve and protect 60 historic structures, run exciting Outdoor Learning and Volunteering Programmes to encourage local people and visitors to engage with the natural environment in a variety of ways.
All proceeds from this workshop will support the work of the Severn Gorge Countryside Trust.
