BEFORE WE REMEMBERJoen Vedel & Yaniya Mikhalina
Drawing on their own experiences as children and now as parents, the artist duo Yaniya Mikhalina & Joen Vedel engage with childhood as a distinct political condition rather than merely a developmental stage. In their exhibition at UKS, childhood unfolds restlessly within the home, the institution and the public sphere as a myriad of overlapping, parallel, and contradictory temporal movements: a vast durational terrain marked by dead ends, projections, fantasies, accidents and a gradually developing sense of orientation.
Just as a child enters the world slightly out of sync with its surroundings, visitors are invited to embark on a journey: a walk through – or a working through – an environment that feels at once familiar and unstable. A place where childhood lingers like a dream in every corridor, emerging as a series of stories told to us from before we remember and that we learn to tell ourselves and each other along the way. Childhood returns, however fleetingly, as a reminder – of a past that refuses to remain past, of what has been and of what might still become.
Conceived as a total installation in the form of a labyrinth, the exhibition unfolds as an intimate constellation of works and structures encompassing sculpture, photography, scribbles, sound and video, alongside objects borrowed from various Norwegian archives.
'Before We Remember' is part of the year-long programme Lessons in Love. The exhibition marks Mikhalina & Vedel’s first large-scale collaboration as a duo.
ABOUT THE ARTISTS:
_Yaniya Mikhalina is a Volga Tatar artist, researcher and knowledge keeper based in Oslo. Her work engages with cross-colonial realities and the psychic and institutional conditions they produce, tracing how imperial structures settle into voice, memory and the capacity to imagine feminist and post-imperial futures. Working across image-making, listening, languaging, editing and archiving, she explores political-spiritual forms of artistic practices.
_Joen Vedel is an artist, organiser and filmmaker based between Oslo and Copenhagen. Vedel’s work encompasses critical media archives, film, installation, text, performance, curation, facilitation and various open-ended forms of collaboration. Attentive to the relation between content, context and form, he often works in the liminal spaces between the personal and the political, between the event and its aftermath.
